The Ann Silvi Memorial Fund
Mezzo-soprano Ann Silvi (1957-2001) was a woman of rare qualities and a singer of rare gifts. A member of "Mensa, N.B.", she drank deeply of life and gave extravagantly of herself to those around her. And she gave just as completely to her art. Those who heard her as Beatrice in COPA's production of Beatrice et Benedict will remember the exuberance and intelligence that she brought to the role. She also was the original designer of our elegant logo, having worked as a Graphic Arts Manager at Merck & Co.
Ann was "born to sing," her mother being a contralto and her father a tenor. Her roles included Mozart's Cherubino and Dorabella, Massenet's Charlotte and Rossini's Rosina and Angelina. One of her last appearances was in Philadelphia with Michele Scanlon in a recital of French melodie, entitled L'Amour et La Mort, which was later immortalized on CD. The scourge of cancer took Ann from us all too early. She was a good and trusted friend.
Her family and friends have joined hands to help COPA, of which she was so valued a part. They contributed mightily to COPA's 2002 production of Don Pasquale, which was dedicated to her memory. We think that Ann might have enjoyed a comic opera as a memorial offering. Donizetti's glittering romp affirms that all is good and generous in life. And so did Ann.
Ann was a linguist and lover of the poetic word and wanted all to know the impact of language and art. The Fund goes towards COPA's general operations and specifically, sponsors a young artist in a role or subsidizes the music library according to each season's needs.
If you would like to make a donation in Ann's name please make your check payable to COPA and mail to: COPA
