~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the time of the Revolution, the poet Andrea Chénier wrote of France:
"I have witnessed the lamentable misery in villages, ghastly begging and harsh sorrow."
Despite his sympathy, he is falsely accused and condemned to the guillotine. In his sight, he comforts a fellow victim, "Courage, my friend, we'll meet on other shores." Maddalena de Coigny, who loves Andrea more than life, impersonates another prisoner to go with him.
The sentiments that move us are reinforced by the beauty of Giordano's score and the libretto of Luigi Illica, factors that have kept Andrea Chénier in the repertory since 1896.
